Biochemical Testing


Just one of the many test done in the microbiology lab. Some of you may wonder what you are looking at, so I'll give a short explanation. This is a immunological test(s). It is a strip with many reagents which allow us to quickly determine a type of bacteria. For example when you are sick with a very sore throat, a swab will be taken from your throat. The swab will be cultured and isolated on special types of agar media. A bacterial suspension is made from the isolated bacteria and added to the strip. After some incubation time the color reactions are observed interpreted. This is one way a laboratory helps a physician in determining what type of antibiotic to prescribe. And voilà!   • Microbiologist here, just want to point out a small inaccuracy in your description. These aren't immunolgical tests, which use protein antibodies.
    These are batteries of biochemical tests, which indicate the ability of bacteria in an isolate to metabolize certain chemicals.
